Chemotherapy is treatment or therapy using medication. Many veterinarians have begun to include it in the treatment of cancer in their patients.
Risks associated with this treatment in pets are similar to those in humans. The drugs used in this treatment is not only attack the offending cancer cells but healthy cells as well leading to many side effects; most notably immunosuppression, anemia, nausea and vomiting, delayed wound healing, reproductive failure and hair loss.
Veterinarians often recommend beginning chemotherapy after surgical removal of a malignant tumor in an attempt to prevent future growth at the original site and/or spreading of cancer cells within the body thus increasing survival rates.
